SUMMARY:Make Music Day!
DESCRIPTION:NPR Describes it as “A sonic street party thrown on a totally outsize scale.” It’s a day to celebrate music in every conceivable style\, created by anyone to celebrate the pleasures of music making together. \nThere will be thousands of performances all across the city. Some are professional\, others are massive participatory events (Mass Appeal) for musicians of all abilities. There have been site-specific performances (trombones on the lake in Central Park\, 99 percussionists in Morningside Heights Park\, percussionists using the buildings of the Flatiron district as their instruments…[I see this one is coming back for a repeat performance this year!]) and mobile recording studios that roam the city in search of fresh material. \nHere’s a list of some of the special projects that were posted on the Make Music Blog this month to give you a taste of what’s to come: \n49 Flutes at locations citywide throughout the day \nA celebration of the 40th anniversary of John Cage’s 49 Waltzes for the Five Boroughs that will feature 49-98 flutists performing citywide throughout the day. Cage’s artwork first appeared in the October 6\, 1977 Rolling Stone magazine\, a gala issue celebrating their move to New York City. For the piece\, Cage constructed”waltzes” through chance operations as a series of 49 multi-colored triangles superimposed on a Hagstrom map of 147 locations throughout the city. Subsequently\, he published a score for performers\, listeners and/or record maker. Presented in partnership with Avant Media and flutist Martha Cargo. \n  \nCantus and Chamber Music Center of NY at the Naumburg Bandshell\, Central Park\, 4:30-7pm \nCantus is hailed as “the premier men’s vocal ensemble in the US” by Fanfare and are winners of the prestigious Margaret Hillis Award for Choral Excellence from Chorus America.  Students from the Chamber Music Center of NY will kick the program off.  Cantus is presented in partnership with Carnegie Hall. \n  \nConcertos for Buildings at Greene Street between Broome and Grand\, 5-7pm \nEnsemble percussion compositions will be played using buildings on a historic SoHo block as instruments. Featuring professionals and students from Mantra Percussion and a woodwinds section from Rahway High School\, NJ. The program features works by Daniel Goode\, Miguel Bolivar and the debut of a new commission by composer Lainie Fefferman. \n  \nElla Fitzgerald Piano Bar throughout historic Harlem\, 11am-6pm \nA celebration of the life and music of Ella on the occasion of her 100th birthday anniversary. A pickup truck decked out with a keyboard and PA system will travel to half a dozen Harlem locations that resonate with Ella’s music heritage ending with an after party at the Jazz Museum of Harlem. Additional stops along the route will include Red Rooster/Ginny’s Supper Club and Shrine. At each stop\, audience members will be given songbooks and mics so that they can sing their favorite Ella song with piano accompaniment. Presented in partnership with the The Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Foundation \n  \nThe Gauntlet Dalehead Arch\, @64th Street\, Central Park\, time TBD \nMake Music New York’s 2016 commission “The Gauntlet” returns to the festival in 2017. This vocal arrangement by composer Sxip Shirey calls for two rows of thirty singers to engage in a musical dialogue as audience members immerse themselves by walking\, at their own pace\, through the rows of paired singers. The audience member experiences the composition by moving through the Gauntlet as if being carried by a river. Featuring the ensemble Choral Chameleon. \n  \nGerard Grisey’s Le Noir D’Etoile at the American Museum of Natural History’s Hall of the Universe 12:30pm lecture presentation\, 1:00-2:00pm concert \nIn 1990\, Gérard Grisey composed an immersive and rigorous composition for six percussionists in which they play along to the amplified sonic emanations of pulsars. Conductor Douglas Perkins leads an ensemble in this special program\, with a pre-concert lecture presentation on pulsars by Mordecai-Mark Low\, Curator\, Department of Astrophysics\, Division of Physical Sciences\, Computational Sciences. Presented with support from FACE Foundation. \n  \nInside the Bird Chorus at Brooklyn Botanic Garden\, Wave Hill (Bronx)\, Fresh Kills Park (Staten Island)\, Jamaica Bay Wildlife Preserve (Queens) and Central Park\, from dawn to dusk \nBack by popular demand for a second season\, musician and philosopher David Rothenberg and friends will perform dawn and dusk concerts in tandem with the local avian population from the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. Additional musicians adept at improvising with wildlife will be stationed in picturesque parks and recreation areas representing every borough. \n  \nMp3 Experiment #14 at Battery Park\, 6-7pm \nMp3 Experiments\, produced by Improv Everywhere\, are free\, open- to-the-public\, participatory audio adventures where attendees download a smartphone app and listen to synchronized secret instructions in a public space via headphones. In a very special collaboration between Make Music NY and Improv Everywhere\, this program will debut a new composition to be performed by thousands of participants on Boomwackers–lightweight\, color-coded percussion tubes that are tuned to musical pitches by length. Park goers and passersby will be taken by surprise as a new music score is created before their eyes! \n  \nOfferings and Songs to the Solstice Sun at Fort Tryon\, 5-7pm \nIrka Mateo\, Neo-Dominican singer\, folklorist and performer in collaboration with IgniVox Productions will guide the Make Music audience and local community through an ancestral Taino ritual performance to worship the summer solstice sun as passed from generation to generation in the Dominican countryside. The audience is invited to participate in a solstice ritual procession\, the offering ceremony and a concert showcasing vocals\, drums\, guitar\, bass and accordion to re-create the mix of the indigenous\, African and European musical genres still played today in the Dominican Republic’s popular religious celebrations and social gatherings. \n  \nOn the Waterfront  at Pier “I”  in Riverside Park\, 4:30-7pm \nTwo grand pianos will face off on the Hudson River waterfront in this special program featuring American duo piano compositions. Karl Larsson and Hitomi Honda kick off the concert with with works by David Lang\, Emily Cooley\, and Scott Wollschleger\, followed by two full hours featuring music by Thea Musgrave\, Gregory Mertl\, and others as performed by students from Mannes Prep and other NYC music schools. Co-presented by Summer on the Hudson with special thanks to Piano Piano. \n  \nPorch Stomp at Governors Island on Saturday\, June 17 (special date) 12pm-5pm \nReturning for its eleventh consecutive season\, Porch Stomp is a festival within the Make Music New York festival that digs deep into the traditions of bluegrass\, folk\, old-time and roots music. The celebration features over fifty singer/songwriters and bands performing from noon to 5pm on the historic porches surrounding the timeless Nolan Park on Governors Island. \n  \nPunk Island at Randall’s Island on Sunday\, June 18 (special date) 12pm-7pm \nPunk Island is a festival within the Make Music Festival organized by a collective of artists\, curators\, musicians and educators whose goal is to bring the vitality\, diversity\, and intensity of the NYC punk scene into the light of day. Now entering its tenth consecutive season\, Punk Island will star over 100 bands playing across eight micro-curated stages to create a truly only-in-New York experience. \n  \nRhythm on Rikers at Riker’s Island\, time TBD \nAntibalas co-founder Martín Perna and teaching artists from NYC’s Afro-beat community will lead an intensive day-long workshop in percussion techniques that will culminate in a performance by and for the incarcerated population of Riker’s Island. \n  \nSouth Shore Lawn Party at the Kreischer Mansion\, 12-9pm \nSouth shore Staten Islanders\, rejoice! The Kreischer Mansion is hosting the “South Shore Lawn Party” to celebrate the launch of the historic mansion’s summer programming. The Victorian porch will transform into a stage for Staten Island musicians\, bands and performers to fill the South Shore with musical sounds usual reserved for the North side of the Island. Food and drinks will be available via local food trucks and caterers throughout the day. \n  \nSousapalooza at Bryant Park\, 5-7pm \nFour wind instrument groups–saxophones\, clarinets\, trumpets & trombones– will improvise in the four corners of the park before assembling to perform the best-loved marches and fanfares of John Philip Sousa and his contemporaries\, led by conductor Jeff W. Ball of the Brooklyn Wind Symphony. \n  \nStreet Studio City at numerous locations citywide throughout the day \nTen teams of world-class DJs and producers will emerge from their studios and pour onto streets citywide to record\, mix and loop the live ambient sounds of the streets. All the while\, the public is encouraged to interact and to sing\, play an instrument\, or record audio to become part of the musical track. At the end of the day\, each team of producers mixes down one 3-minute track\, using only material recorded on site\, to share that evening at a “Street Studio Smackdown” party at the offices of SoundCloud. \n  \nUptown Funk throughout historic Harlem\, throughout the day \nUptown Funk is a walking tour of historic Harlem that connects an assortment of Make Music New York concerts\, presenting partners and venues\, including the 3rd Annual Make Music Harlem block party\, the Ella Fitzgerald Piano Bar\, and special events produced in conjunction with the Jazz Foundation of America. \nWorld Music Block Party at Astor Place Plaza\, 11am-6pm \nProduced in partnership with Joe’s Pub at the Public Theater\, this daylong block party will feature seven groups representing diverse immigrant populations in NYC. The party will also feature the finalists and celebrity judges of the first ever  “Drum Off Contest” a contest presented in partnership with Blue Man Group NY. \n  \nMake Music New York \n– Celebrates the musician in all of us \n– Connects New Yorkers to their communities and to each other \n– Energizes the shared social spaces that make NYC a cultural capital

SUMMARY:Death of Classical Music: the Crypt Sessions with Cellist Joshua Roman
DESCRIPTION:The Long Version: You might have been one of the millions to watch Joshua Roman’s post-election Bach Cello Suite performance (livestreamed on the Facebook page of TED\, where Josh acts as a Senior Fellow). Either way\, you should spend more time with this mind-boggling talented cellist/composer/curator\, and we’re pleased offer you that opportunity on May 3\, 2017\, as Josh descends into the Crypt for a solo cello recital entitled Riding Light. \nThe music begins in darkness with Bach’s spare\, haunting Suite No. 2 in D Minor\, before moving through sonatas by György Ligeti and George Crumb – both written during the period of lovestruck adolescence\, with music that alternates between shaded meditation and stormy intensity – and finishing with a composition of his of his own\, the transcendently radiant Riding Light. \nRoman performed in the Crypt with Gregg Kallor in last season’s finale concert of The Tell-Tale Heart\, and his playing was praised by Berkshire Fine Arts\, saying: “Roman is a musician who can afford to expose his talent in long drawn out single tones..often miraculously drawn from his instrument.” \nIf you aren’t quick enough to get tix to this performance\, it’s worth noting that Josh will be performing a few days later (May 6\, to be exact) at SoHo’s The Sheen Center – pick up tix here before they’re gone: http://sheencenter.org/shows/roman/ \nThe Short Version: Come ride the lightning with us\, in what promises to be a profoundly impactful performance by one of classical music’s brightest stars

SUMMARY:Bridging the Gap: Music by composers from the Yale School of Music
DESCRIPTION:Bridging the Gap IV\n\nPanel discussion at 7PM\, followed by concert \n\n\n\n\nMusic by and conversation with composers from the Yale School of Music: William Gardiner\, Paul Kerekes\, David Lang\, Hannah Lash\, Daniel Schlosberg\, and Christopher Theofanidis \nModerated by Robert Sirota \n\n\n\nAbout the Series\n Bridging the Gap\, created by National Sawdust Curator Robert Sirota\, is a series of concerts of chamber\, choral\, and solo compositions that explore the student/teacher and mentor/mentee relationships between generations of composers.\n\n\n\nThe series will emphasize the influences that brought about the expansion of musical styles and approaches over the past 20-30 years. How has music changed? What are the aesthetic values and sound worlds from which this new music is emerging?  What are the roles of academic vs. non-academic influences? How have older composers been influenced by the work of their younger colleagues? \nEach concert will be preceded by a discussion with composer mentors\, mentees\, and performers\, led by a distinguished thought leader. The concerts themselves will include performances of works by both younger composers and the teachers who have influenced their development.

SUMMARY:FREE Face the Music: Very Young Composers Showcase
DESCRIPTION:About the Show\n Very Young Composers aims to unlock and empower the natural artistry\, musicianship\, and creativity inherent in virtually all children\, regardless of economic circumstance\, race\, gender\, or nationality. Goals are to build personal confidence and leadership; to cultivate deep understanding of music; and to inspire tomorrow’s composers to bring the music of the future into the concert hall. Founded by Jon Deak\, a former member of the Philharmonic\, Very Young Composers began as an after-school program aimed primarily at children aged 9-11. The essential requirement for participation is not extensive musical accomplishment\, but rather a love for music. The Composer’s Bridge follows through with students up to age 13\, giving them incomparable access to professional musicians and public performances of their works. Programs inspired by Very Young Composers across the United States and around the world connect young people through creative projects.\n\n\n\nAll compositions will be performed by Face the Music. \nThe Very Young Composers Project is supported in part by the Mary Duke Biddle Foundation and the D’Addario Foundation.

SUMMARY:Philip Glass Festival: Madrigal Opera
DESCRIPTION:About the Show\n National Sawdust is delighted to honor advisory board member Philip Glass during his 80th year. During 2017’s Spring Season\, we will celebrate his groundbreaking oeuvre by showcasing solo and collaborative works\, including his rarely performed MADRIGAL OPERA\, directed by NS Artist in Residence\, R. B. Schlather.\n\n\n\nWritten in 1980 and commissioned by the Holland Festival\, this chamber opera is written for 6 voices\, violin\, and viola. “Madrigal Opera”\, written for Dutch theater artist Rob Malasch\, is conceived as an artful paradox: a music theatre work with no specific theatrical content. It was commissioned with the intent for creative interpretations by a theatrical director at hand\, therefore differing itself from traditional opera form as it has no predetermined theatrical narrative. With NS Artist in Residence R. B. Schlather directing three outside the box performers – Vince Peterson leading Johnny Gandelsman and Choral Chameleon – the audience will engage in an unforgettable musical experience not to be missed.

SUMMARY:Spektral Quartet: Playing Out
DESCRIPTION:About the Show\n Playing Out is a showcase of liberated creativity\, defying definition and building new musical lexicons through the intersection of experimental jazz\, improvisation\, and electroacoustic music. The program features the New York premiere of an ecstatic new quartet by George Lewis (Fromm Foundation commission)\, as well as mesmeric numbers by Katherine Young and Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s Mead Composer-in-Residence Samuel Adams. For its National Sawdust debut\, Spektral Quartet is joined by flute maven Claire Chase for Anthony Cheung’s jazz-infiltrated “Real Book of Fake Tunes” (also commissioned by Fromm). SUMMARY:Nordic Affect
DESCRIPTION:About the Show\n Nordic Affect performs a selection of works that features the intimate and unique music that has emerged from the Icelandic scene in recent years. “Decades ago\, the Sugarcubes proved to the rest of the world that Icelandic rock was its own original creation – now Nordic Affect promises to do the same for the country’s new-music community.” The performance of this program for varying combinations of violin\, viola\, cello\, harpsichord\, and electronics coincides with the release of their album\, Raindamage. Raindamage offers music with connections to ecology\, be it through references to nature\, exploration of sound or interaction with the environment of the performance space\, and was released in February 2017 on Sono Luminus. The performance will feature works from the album by Valgeir Sigurðsson and Úlfur Hansson\, as well as music by Anna Thorvaldsdottir\, Hildur Guðnadóttir\, and María Huld Markan Sigfúsdottir.\n\n\nAbout the Artists\n\n\n\n\nIcelandic ensemble Nordic Affect has been hailed for its “affectionate explorations” (BBC Music Magazine) and “commitment to their repertoire” (Classical Music). Nordic Affect (Halla Steinunn Stefánsdóttir\, violin and artistic director; Gudrún Hrund Hardardóttir viola; Hanna Loftsdóttir\, cello; Gudrún Óskarsdóttir harpsichord) was formed by a group of period instrument musicians united in their passion for viewing familiar musical forms from a different perspective and for daring to venture into new musical terrain. In 2013\, the ensemble was nominated for the Nordic Council Music Prize and was named Performer of the Year at the 2014 Iceland Music Awards.

SUMMARY:On Fillmore: Happiness of Living Record Release
DESCRIPTION:About the Show\n Carved from an ecstatic multi-day session in Rio de Janeiro\, On Fillmore’s newest album Happiness of Living moves effortlessly between deep cosmic pockets\, celestial vocals and occasional pop tunes to create a glowing mood unlike anything previously released from the long-running musical partnership of percussionist Glenn Kotche (Wilco) and bassist Darin Gray (Tweedy). The Brazilian sessions that would become Happiness of Living unfolded in a spirit of openness with On Fillmore inviting others into their deepest creative space for the first time\, including esteemed producer Kassin (Caetano Veloso\, Arto Lindsay). Kotche and Gray can remember “the musically life-changing experience” of first seeing Kassin perform in Brazil at the 2005 Perc Pan Festival\, prompting them to invite him and others back to Chicago for a collaborative show. That meeting opened the door for their critically-acclaimed 2009 album\, Extended Vacation (Dead Oceans)\, which Pitchfork called “accessible but not pedestrian\, complex but not esoteric”\, and which now becomes fully formed in the 2017 release of Happiness of Living on Northern Spy Records.
