Song Exploder

Live Conversation & Podcast Taping

Celebrated as “The best use of the podcast format ever” (Vulture) and “Possibly the most perfect podcast” (Quartz), the wildly popular Song Exploder podcast features artists like Björk, U2, Iggy Pop, and Carly Rae Jepsen taking apart their songs, and piece by piece, telling the story of how they were made. At this special live event, host Hrishikesh Hirway will ask  Derek Miller and Alexis Krauss of the Brooklyn rock duo Sleigh Bells to delve into the specific decisions that have gone into creating their exuberantly brash and visceral songs. A “former teen-pop singer turned punk-rock badass,” Krauss displays “the cataclysmic cool of a cheerleader who’s just hijacked a monster truck” (Pitchfork).

I started listening to this podcast and fell in love with it. It’s like a What Makes It Great? performance but with contemporary music, existing at the intersection of education and entertainment like so much of our other programming does. Hrishi’s interview style and even just the way he mics the voices is so intimate, it really reminds me of the Merkin Hall listening experience. He gets inside the artist’s head and inside the nuts and bolts of their song in a way that I’ve never experienced before, really deepening the listening experience.
