Gunther Schuller coined the term “Third Stream” with the Modern Jazz Quartet in 1960, suggesting that Jazz and “Classical” might live together in a “Third Stream”:

Today, we have largely dispensed with the term “Third Stream” and find that fusions between Jazz and all of the various other musical arts seem to happen naturally.
